It was revealed in the national press yesterday that the NSW ALP is currently doing secret preference deals with the Greens over issues like gay law reform and marine parks.

Notes leaked from the meetings apparently show that the Greens are going to push their votes to the ALP via preferences in several key marginal seats in the upcoming election.

It is absolutely no coincidence then that the NSW Government is about to ram new electoral laws through the NSW Parliament that would make it illegal to discuss or even know about these secret preference deals.

Noted psephologist Antony Green was quoted in Crikey yesterday as saying about the changes:

"The new rules are not regulations to improve the openness of the electoral system, but a deliberate attempt to hide the nuts and bolts of preference wheeling and dealing from public view."

So much for an open and transparent democracy, now you can't even know WHO you are voting for let alone WHY!
